How To Save Money On Your
Health
Insurance
The cost of medical care these
days is
very high. This means that it
would only take one or two health problems to put any individual or
family in deep debt - unless you have the right kind of health
insurance. Because most health insurance policies are very high, many
people cannot afford them. If you are looking for a good health
insurance policy and want good rates, then here are a few things you
can do to help lower your premiums and find a way to get the health
insurance you need.
Get
Healthy
When you buy a health insurance policy, the application will need to be
filled out and the health questions will be asked. A basic physical
will also be given. Now, if there are any indications that you are in
any way less than a perfect specimen of health, then there is going to
be an increase in your premiums because of added risk to the insurer.
To translate this as simple as possible it means that if your blood
pressure is high, or you are overweight, a smoker and drinker - then
you are going to pay higher premiums. By simply adopting a healthier
lifestyle, and getting in better shape, your health insurance rates can
be lowered. Remember, though, that health insurance premiums are often
raised some every year, so instead of seeing an increase your policy
may just stay the same – still producing a savings.
Increase
Your Deductible Amounts
This part of your insurance policy will probably effect your premium
more than anything else. If you can afford to put the value of a higher
deductible into the bank, then you may want to raise yours to about
$1,000 or higher. The higher it is, the less your premiums will be. You
will want to be sure to put that amount into the bank, though, because
you must pay it before the insurer will pay anything.
Eliminate
Your Copay
This part of your policy costs you every year, whether you use this
benefit or not. If you are reasonably healthy and only make a couple of
doctor's visits a year, then you probably do not really need it. It
will save you hundreds of dollars a year if you do not have it. If you
do make frequent doctor visits though, you might want to keep it.
Calculate your actual out of pocket expenses as opposed to what the
copay option is costing you.
Group
Insurance Is Cheaper
If you have the option to be able to get group insurance, then this
would be the cheapest way to go. With the possibility of your employer
paying up to 85% of the cost of your coverage, it literally becomes the
option of choice. If you presently have health insurance coverage,
though, and become newly employed for their insurance, do not drop your
existing policy until your new health plan actually takes effect and
you see what is or is not covered.
Eliminate
Drug Payment Options
This particular part will need to be thought about before you actually
do it. If you need a lot of medicine each month then you probably
should not do this. But if you are in good health and use very little,
if any, medications, then you could probably afford to drop this part
of your policy, too. It will produce an additional sizable savings off
of your premium.
Each of these things will enable you to enjoy some savings on your
health insurance. It is up to you to carefully evaluate which features
of your health insurance are more needed than other parts and act
accordingly.
